SENDERO
Thoughts on the Monte Azul Experience – Costa Rica 2015
Much of my work begins with a walk — and the forms that I observe and collect on these walks. So, armed with a large knife for collecting plants and bags for earth and plant materials, I set out on the trails (senderos) around Monte Azul. I walked every day – from the Rio Chirripo to the waterfall, on the small, hidden sendero that led to the studio, on the forest edge sendero that skirted a high cliff and over the cliff to the farm and baby goats. The variety of vegetation, the light, the sounds on each path were amazing. These walks and the system of senderos at Monte Azul became the framework for the drawings I completed. The color in the drawings came directly from earth and plant materials collected on my walks. The Sendero drawings are a visual diary of my experiences, investigation, observations and presence at Monte Azul.
