LOVE NOTES AND ELEGIES
Love Notes and Elegies began in 2021 — I was hiking and kayaking in slot canyons in Utah. Hiking through the slot canyons was other-worldly – the rock of the canyon walls was smooth and rippled, embedded with crystals and mineral formations. I completed many small drawings focused on crystals, rock markings and the plants that survived in this beautiful but hostile environment. The series grew to include a variety of specific locations, from coral reefs off St. Eustatius, to an arroyo near my home in El Paso. Most of the drawings contain images of plants or animals which are threatened to critically endangered, and all the geographic locations have experienced human-wrought changes. I attached each group of drawings together in a grid formation with a large drawing covering the surface — a visual diary commemorating the journeys.
